Can someone recommend a good book on the aesthetics of visual graphics and web design?

I’m a good php programmer and i know photoshop, after effects and flash and am a decent graphic designer technically but frankly i feel i am missing some training in standard design practice. Can someone point me to a good book or tutorial or author who covers the art of of graphic design from a purely visual perspective? I don’t need a programming how to, I know them, i need guidance in style, colors, layers, depth, shadow, mood, font usage, good use of different effects, etc.

You could take some inspiration here: http://www.vjtube.net

This might sound unusual, but the art and photography section at your local bookstore is a real bonanza for web design inspiration. There are entire books on typography, color and mood, using perspective and so forth. There are also logo books that are a good primer for basic visual styles. You may also want to check out the books at lynda.com for particular techniques. Lastly, this is a more expensive option, but I highly recommend the graphics course from AWAI (www.awaionline.com) – while their main focus is writing, they also have a graphic design course which is not a programming how-to, but rather an intense study in all things visual and artistic.
