Computer Game Devlopment Degree, is this a joke?

I looked at various colleges and some offer Video Game design degree? Isn’t that just a waste of time? Seriously like aren’t gamers going to pick this degree just for the sake to play games? and not to mention how much physics & maths is included in game design?
I also thought gaming companies higher people with Computer Science Degrees or Physics… not computer game development… lol

It’s a bit of a fad, but there are some jobs for game developers. The commercials always show kids just playing games, but the reality of the situation is far different.

Honestly you shouldn’t bother with those degrees as they’re junk. Just get a computer science degree with a focus on graphics or AI and that would be much better.

Right now the job market is over saturated with wishful thinkers trying to enter the game development field, but the jobs just aren’t there.

all of the top games companies employ people with computer science / maths degrees. the kind of companies that employ people with ‘game design’ degrees are people that make online flash games such as miniclip. I seriously doubt anyone with a game design degree would be able to work on a title for a leading games console.

I am in my final year of a computing with games development degree. It is essentially a computer science degree with Games Development included. There is a LOT of physics and maths, as well as a lot of programming… I am now qualified to take a standard software development position as well as a game design job. I have experience in Java, C#, C++ and XNA (C#), Database programming (Oracle PL-SQL, MySQL) 3d Modelling (3ds max, Blender) , Maths, Physics and software patterns and game design principles. Obviously it depends on where and what course you choose but my games course involves NO playing of computer games.. (To be honest Im so busy with my theses and final year project i cant remember the last time i got a chance!). Another thing to keep in mind is that just because you like video games does not mean you will like designing them, I actually don’t like Games programming i prefer Digital Image processing and Mobile application development and will probably pursue a career in these areas.. So in short my course (Institute of Technology Tralee) isn’t an easy one but is rewarding and gives participants the chance to explore a wide variety of areas… But obviously i cant speak for everywhere.. Hope this helps?
