Is there a cost-effective option to learn graphic design — beyond free tutorials?

You need to go to art school..being able to use the tools does not make you a designer. I can use a hammer…am I a carpenter or should I be able to take money from people who think I’m a carpenter?

Hmm.. well if there is a cost effective way, I certainly haven’t found it. I went to design school for 4 years. Interned at a top magazine for 2. Spent over $3,000 on a MACBook and approx 2,000$ on the CS3. I do however have a great job and make a ton doing freelance jobs for friends / family / etc…

So my answer is no.. however I do believe you either have “it” or you don’t. So hopefully you do! I believe that schooling and class has only allowed me to perfect my eye for design and balance (even if by assymetry) that is already innate.

P.S. I take offense slightly to this question because you don’t know how many people think they that because they can turn on a computer and use the paint can that they are “designers”. Unfortunately for them, their work turns out horribly bad. In fact we have a wall at my office of bad design. It’s COVERED. The only thing that keeps these people away from us is their own empty resumes.

It’s one of the best around and quite unique in approach. I’ve seen my ‘design efficiency’ take off after I learned some of these methods.

Some of you people need to get over yourselves…the guy just asked a simple question.

For your information a close friend pulls in over 100K annually and has never been to secondary school for art or design. He just has “it” and learned everything else he needs to know by becoming proficient with the programs on his own. It’s all about talent and word-of-mouth.

Bill Gates never finished college and I could name hundreds more who pull in the big bucks with no degree to rub in people’s faces.

    N. Mil, I would start with my nearest community college. They often have reasonably priced non-credit courses in various publishing and design applications. Good luck!
