If you are interested in a graphic design career, you have to understand that it takes a lot of groundwork to build your foundation on. Having talent for colors, shapes and images is one thing. Developing them into assets is another.

Do not be disillusioned by the impression that people who know a great deal about image-editing software such as Photoshop can carve a great future out of a graphic design career. Photoshop and its counterparts are tools which are necessary but not critical in the development of your graphic design career. A graphic design career is possibly one of the most challenging yet exciting careers that one can pursue. It is fast-paced, adrenaline pumping, full of oohs and aahs, and the best of all; you get paid for your creativity.

Graphic Design Education

Graphic design is probably as old as man himself; the cave writings in Lascaux, France are 15,000 (or more) year old graphic designs. Illuminated manuscripts from the Medieval Period are graphic designs. Anything that uses pictures and symbols to communicate something is a graphic design.

In the last half of the twentieth century, graphic design moved from the drafting table to the computer. During this time of transition, computer skills were more important than design skills. Computerized graphic design programs were complicated and difficult for most people to use. If you were computer savvy, you could learn enough about design to find employment as a graphic designer without post-secondary education.

Cost: An associate degree program costs less than a bachelor’s degree program. Partly, that is because you are paying for fewer years of education.

If you get your associate degree at a community college, the cost per credit will be lower than at any four-year college or university. (That may not be true of an associate degree program from a career or technical college.)

Professional Graphic Designers

Ever wondered how some graphic designers always manage to produce beautiful looking designs for their brochures, website designs, logo designs? Talent…yes, it helps but there are a handful of more important things you can do that will have even complete beginners producing award winning design.

Forget everything you’ve ever been told about Graphic Design
There are some hard and fast things that graphic designers will insist are to be obeyed. Only use limited fonts on a design for example or never use green on a magazine or book cover as people will not buy it. Stuff and nonsense. You can pretty much do whatever you like but you must apply these STRICT GRAPHIC DESIGN RULES and you will soon be walking away with graphic design silverware.
