Im planning to get a Bachelors in Computer Science and then a Master in Game Design. I have Computer science to back me up if i cant get a job as a Video game designer. Is this good?
Yes, that sounds like a good plan.
Take it from someone who has experience though, The Computer Science program has probably one of the toughest course loads and difficulty apart from engineering (at least at my University).
I don’t want to scare you away though, a Computer Science degree is very valuable.
I agree with Benjamin on this one. Even if you don’t get a job in the game-design field, the knowledge of how games work will come in very handy in other fields. (For example: Weapons simulation.)
The computer science degree is extraordinarily valuable.
Ever heard of a 65 year old retiring from games?
Yes, tons of money to be made in a growing field. You better LOVE math though
Do you have any experience in video game design or character design?
Such programs that Maya, Cinema 4D, 3D Studio Max, and many DAZ 3D programs offer?
Going to school for video games is a great learning process and a nice shine on your portfolio, but it takes some serious dedication to be street wise about the little things that you DON’T get at school.
So grab yourself some trials of any of the above listed programs above or buy one if you like it and find it useful, and pretty much start playing around with the many different abilities you can do with it. Trust me, when you’re at school you could surely use the extra step up before the lesson comes around.
You can start there, but you should spend a lot of your time in internships and work opportunities in the industry. Earn your chops walking wall-hacks with a QA department. Work the sysadmin side or as a DB coder while earning your masters. Pick your schools based upon their relationships with the games companies you want to work with, and never, ever burn a bridge.
