We all have our own ideas on the difference between a custom developed website versus a web template, but here is the technical perspective of this dilema. Custom developed work cost more money, it is true. Because a web developer will literally code your website by hand, this is a long process with very thorough understanding of programming languages such as HTML, PHP, CSS, Javascript and sometimes even flash action script. If you can think of these languages similar to the different languages in the world, it is like translating something in English into French, Italian, Spanish, and some times Chinese. This process will generally take longer to complete, and there are more rooms for error since they are developed according to the client’s every wish. But a template on the other hand will offer stability and quick turn around time. A template is a set of files that is pre-developed for the purpose of quick installation and modification to make it suit your needs. Web templates are generally not exclusive which means there can be many websites out there that is running on the similar structure. However every template is customizable to your business name, branding and look.

Web templates are usually better developed in terms of errors, these systems are usually tested many times, and usually error free. The cost of a web template is considerably lower compare to custom work because many of the codes are re-used. Although on the surface to the untrained eye, it is virtually impossible for you to know it is a template, unless you look for the foot prints. One thing to be aware of when you are choosing the template, you should look for industry specific templates for several reasons. A industry specific template will offer you the common features and interfaces for your business. This way you can launch your website in the right direction, save time and money in the long run. A poorly developed template is almost useless, because of the missing components and features which if required can cost you much more than the template itself.

So in a nut shell, a web template will offer you a quick turn around time for deployment, and it is a lot cheaper in price. But just make sure the template is specific to your industry and needs, because the worst mistake you can make is to purchase a template based on price, and you need extensive modifications to it. It can be even more expensive at that point compare to a custom developed website. Who wins between Dreamweaver CS3, Microsoft Expression and Visual Web Developer?

I have an website written in asp.net for a client and we have been using Microsoft’s free Visual Web Developer Express Edition tool. However, we have found this to be a bit sluggish and lacking in the WYSIWYG design areas, so we were wondering if an upgrade to either Dreamweaver CS3 or Microsoft’s new Expression Web Design tool would be prudent. His budget is sufficient to cover the cost of either product, we would just like to know if the money would be worth it over the free software we are using now.

I know that Dreamweaver has good synchronization ability but lacks in asp.net and intellisense. How are these 3 areas in Expression?
Please tell me if you have used all 3 and the pros and cons of each. Thanks.

Your web designer will create a sample template of your website to illustrate the layout, colors, and the position of all those objects that will make your website com alive.

This first stage is crucial. You need to be very positive that you like the mock up before you give the ok to start designing your website. The reason is very simple; a mock up is nothing more than an illustration. What comes after that stage is the real deal; converting the template into a fully functional website. Trust me when I tell you that you do not want to tell your web designer to change the color of the back ground once you have approved the mock up. Your web designer will most probably get a tantrum and after that he will have to charge you an additional fee for extra labor. One final issue which is major and contributes to the patience of a web designer is the grammar of your content. Web designers are not secretaries. A web designer will gather together all the information you have given him for your website and he will make this work on the web. If today you give your web designer the text that belongs to the about us page, but tomorrow you change your mind and you send him again new text for the about us page he will not be very happy.
