What software/books should i get to help me with pursuing and educating myself in Video Game Design?

I am wanting to become a video game designer/programmer/etc. And I have been looking for books and software to help me within that career but there are so many and I don’t know what to get. What should I get to help me? Any suggestions? Please help!
