I use Dreamweaver MX on a day to day basis, and I’ve found it to be a great IDE to program in. I havent had much experience with many web developing IDE’s but I have used many programming IDE’s. On the programming side, there are many features such as code auto completion and code snippets which speed up development time alot.
I dont use the drag and drop interface for designing web interfaces, but from what I’ve used its very easy and very powerful.
One of the best things about Dreamweaver is its interface is totally customisable. By changing some XML files, you can create your own drag and drop buttons and menus, its realy good.
Dreamweaver is good for inspecting errors in codes. In editing stage, it provides automatic completion of codes and HTML tags, thus lowering the chance of possible errors.
But when formatting the webpage, it set up styles for almost every kind of formatting. This may make an HTML file unnecessarily large. For example, if you know HTML, it is easier and causes less trouble if you use the tag for a bold type word instead of setting up styles for bold type.
Dreamweaver 8 from Macromedia has a real good design interface and i use this to design my websites. The reason i do this is because it has the following pros:
1. Almost accurate design interface
2. XHTML instead of HTML
3. Support for server-side scripts like PHP and even ASP
4. Easy to integrate CSS, JavaScript and other scripting languages
5. Easy Flash Integration
6. You may also insert plugins made by other companies into Dreamweaver
7. Code completion option so you don’t NEED to remember the syntax
8. Professional look and feel
Now life’s a b**** so not everything’s perfect. Dreamweaver has the following cons:
1. I’ve personally seen a lot of bugs
2. Sometimes the Design View gets a little messed up when you’re designing a complex page with a lotta tables
3. A small con, but a con nonetheless: sometimes when you want to close the tag with a “” it fills the rest up for you automatically. Now this is helpful 95% of the time but can get a LITTLE frustrating when you’re making hardcore pages
so i’d rate Dreamweaver a 4 on 5. its one of the best web designing ide’s, and most professionals use it. hope this was helpful
