I’m 18 and am just starting out in graphic design. I have had a little bit of experience and teaching in the field but am needing to go on to further education. I really want to be working the job right now so I’d rather not spend a lot of time in school, but if it takes 4 years, that’s what I’ll do. What schools do you recommend? I’m looking for something in the US and am open to any state. Not really wanting an Art Institute.
Rather than go for a 4-year degree, you can enroll in a Masters Certificate with a school like Sessions (based in NY).
It’s an online design school, but you get help in preparing your design portfolio from people who work in the industry.
Alternatively, you can learn specific design packages on your own — like Photoshop or Gimp — so that you pick up skills needed for professional work faster.
first you have to decide whether you want to just work freelance for clients who don’t have a lot of money to pay you, or wether you want to be highly professional and work for big companies. If you just want to work freelance you can find programs that are 3 years or even just take some courses that last for a semester to a year. If you want to be a professional in the field you will have to get a degree which will take 4 years.
I don’t know any schools in the US, but in Canada we have OCAD (ontario college of art & design). its in the top 3 design schools in canada. It might be cheaper than going to college in the US because I know US colleges tend to be A LOT more expensive than in Canada
